Bet on the Kentucky Derby

This year’s Kentucky Derby will take place on May 7, 2011, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Churchill Downs covers 147 acres and seats nearly 50,000 people, though crowds can reach over 150,000 on Derby day.

This is known as the first jewel in the Triple Crown and has been nicknamed “Run for the Roses” which offers a $2,000,000 purse to the winner – and tons of cash to those who bet on the Kentucky Derby at tracks, Vegas books, and of course online sportsbooks.

Super Saver was the winner last year and the jockey was Calvin Borel and the trainer was Todd Pletcher, making a lot of cash for recreational bettors who wagered big money on the super jockey come Derby time.

Super Saver was a 7-1 favorite to win and finished in the slowest winning time in over 20 years at 2:04:05. Coming in 2nd to place was Ice Box while Paddy O’Prado came in 3rd to show. Coming in 4th place was Make Music For Me. Top favorite Lookin At Lucky started on the rail and finished 6th.

It’s hard to imagine this gentleman’s sport would also turn into one of the most fiercely wagered-on events year-round.  However, with the TV and marketing dollars that go into broadcasting its history, its traditions, and of course the betting odds of each racehorse, well – it’s no wonder why it’s regarded as the “most exciting 2 minutes in sports.”

We’re gonna take a quick look at some of our favorites and longshots to keep an eye on for this year’s big race, along recommend some top-notch books that have some amazing sportsbook deposit options for your wallet.

2011 Kentucky Derby Favorites

Dialed In: 10-1 This thoroughbred was the Gulfstream winner and has been a favorite for quite awhile around the circuit.

Comma to the Top: 25-1 The horse had a four race streak going but faltered in Santa Anita. Definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Jaycito: 40-1 This is a longshot but a pretty darn good horse that has stamina to win this event.

Horses to avoid with short odds are Uncle Mo at 3-1 and To Honor and Serve at 5-1. If you bet the horses that have the 25-1 or all the way to 100-1 you can hedge several horses for your bet and have a great opportunity for a big pay out on race day.  Betting and completing any Superfecta’s this year will be just as tough as any in years past, especially with this year’s Derby entrants coming in stronger than ever and some coming off big wins in the prep races.
